A katabasis, as the Greeks would say. My first journey is as follows.
I had difficulty finding a place to go down. I went through several possibilities, in fact selecting a place was the cause of my delay. I couldn’t find a specific place I felt comfortable enough with to go down into the Lower World. I played with the idea of my old house in Miami, and then I fell upon the idea of my trench I was excavating in Italy. That was the spot.
I tried to go into my old trench and find a hole, but I had reached bottom there while excavating. So I looked for an old tree on the hill and went down there. Descend. I tried to slide down the roots as suggested, but I ended up in a tunnel walking. There was trickling water in the tunnel.
I found myself struggling with going to the Lower World, through the tunnel, and already being there. I found myself in two places at once as my mind (?) leapt ahead to what I had seen before. Yes, before, as I tried a journey about a year ago to meet my power animal – but wasn’t sure if I did.
The image I was touched with first was a forest image. Kind of like a tropical forest with deer and a stream. I get the impression of a beaver, too. Then I moved on to other images, one in particular of a beach paradise with bright clear sky and shallow water. Lots of fish. Felt the impression of a dolphin and then a shark. Shark started to bite my left ankle and tear at it. Not sure if this was a residual idea left from the book (by Ingerman) which talked about animals tearing body parts up to help heal.
Looks like I have to learn to trust the process. I have to have a routine spot to descend and make it the same, consistent place to check my results. I also have to keep doing it to develop the understanding of what my experience of a journey is like. This time only a 12 minute session using Ingerman’s CD (12 min. drumming track with whistles and rattles).
